The Dialogue Society is pleased to announce the parallel event “Women Empowerment in the UK: Women of Faith” hosted at United Nations Committee on the Status of Women New York 66th Annual event.
SPEAKERS:
Iysha Arun, Research Fellow, Dialogue Society
Hannah Lowe, Project Coordinator, Dialogue Society
Shuying Huang, Research Fellow, Dialogue Society
Dr Anna Piela, Scholar of gender and Islam, Northwestern University
Cllr Rakhia Ismail, Islington Council
Dr Lindsay Simmonds, Research Officer, Religion and Global Society Department, LSE
Featuring three key speakers from our panel series entitled “Women of Faith”, this event will explore the barriers and challenge women of faith encounter in three areas of community, public service, and media. The Dialogue Society has produced a policy paper reviewing and collating the issues raised during panel discussions and formulating policies from recommendations made during discussions. This policy paper therefore aims to highlight issues of gender equality through policy recommendations informed by both the shared experiences expressed during open discussion, and themes that emerge from recent literature. Following this focus, this event aims to discuss the underrepresentation of women of faith and the intersectional discriminations they encounter, followed by a forum to exchange personal experiences and provide a space for discussion on recommendations made in the policy paper “A UK: Empowering Women of Faith in the Community, Public Service, and Media”.
We hope that this event will contribute to dialogue surrounding the pressures that women, particularly women of faith face in community, public service and media.
