On the occasion of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 68th Session, ADVU (Association for Dialogue and Universal Values) organized an in-person side event “Role of Media in Preventing Violence Against Women” on March 14th, Thursday at 10:30 AM at the Salvation Army in New York in partnership with the Journalists and Writers Foundation.

This thought-provoking panel convened media professionals to delve into the complex interplay between media representation and the pervasive issue of violence against women. Speakers explored the multifaceted role media plays in shaping narratives, influencing public perception, and potentially driving societal change. Gender-equal media literacy, combatting with impunity against all forms of violence against women and femicide is very critical to shape the social discourse fighting against imposed patriarchal norms. Women journalists and media experts addressed the role of ethical considerations in preventing violence against women and the consequences of prejudiced reporting language placing women and young girls on the spot as vulnerable members of society. The panel also proposed strategies for constructive media coverage of women`s rights and share action-oriented suggestions for civil society entities.
