Welcome to the final episode of “The Crisis of Meaning and the Cure of Sight.”

We diagnosed the loss of meaning, then explored the cure of attention. Now we arrive at the deepest question: what does it mean to be rightly related to the One who established the self in the first place?

In this episode, Ahmad Tahir brings Said Nursi into conversation with Søren Kierkegaard, the Danish theologian, poet and founder of existentialist thought. Drawing mainly on Kierkegaard’s The Sickness Unto Death, together with Stages on Life’s Way and Works of Love, he shows how both thinkers see despair as a misrelation of the self, and faith as the only way to rest transparently in God. Along the way, he draws on Nursi’s teaching of the self as a mirror and on his reflections on suffering, patience and reliance on God, with echoes of Iain McGilchrist, Al-Ghazali and Ibn Arabi.

The lecture explores why despair is not a passing mood but a universal condition, why the self cannot be its own foundation, and why the problem lies in a broken connection rather than in the world itself.
